Downtown Burlington has a new summer series this year, and it is built around a different local artist every week.

The Downtown Summer Music Series run at the Elgin Promenade, on Saturday’s this July and August. Music plays 1 to 4pm, there is no ticket and no admission, you just walk up and enjoy.

The format is a pop-up rather than a festival. One act, three hours, set up in the middle of the shops and patios so you can catch a set while you are already out for lunch or running errands. The association puts something different alongside the music each week too. So far that has included free face painting, caricature artists, and a typewriter poet.

Emma Whale opened the series on July 11, and Ariana Fig plays this Saturday, July 25, followed by Luiz Grante on August 1, Natalie Reis on August 8, Jesse Adams on August 15, and Nolan Gibson on August 22.

Burlington votes on Monday, Oct. 26, and the ballot is filling in. As of Monday, three people have registered to run for mayor and 18 for the six council seats. Every ward has had at least two candidates since early June.

The city runs a dedicated election site where all of it lives, and new candidates are posted there within about 24 hours of registering, so it's the quickest place to see who's in.

You have a few ways to cast a ballot this year, including voting online or in person at an advance poll or on election day. The site will also confirm you're on the voters list and tell you which ward you're in.

Yesterday's storm rolled in just before lunch and took the lights with it. More than 3,500 Burlington Hydro customers lost power as the weather moved through late morning, with the south end taking the worst of it.

The two biggest outages were both down by the lake: about 1,800 customers in the central neighbourhood and another 1,700 in Dynes. Smaller pockets went dark in Brant Hills, Roseland and Plains, and further north in Tyandaga and Headon Forest.

Burlington Hydro's outage map had almost everyone pegged for restoration between 2 and 4 p.m., and crews worked through the list one neighbourhood at a time.

St. Matthew on-the-Plains Anglican Church is teaming up with the Burlington Food Bank and the Compassion Society to collect healthy snacks for local kids who won't be getting school lunches over the summer.

The three organizations are asking residents to donate juice boxes, cereals, fruit cups, pudding, and other healthy snacks throughout the summer.

Drop-offs are welcome at St. Matthew on-the-Plains on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., at the Burlington Food Bank from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, or the Compassion Society between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
