Another Waterfront Festival?! 🎶
Supplied to Burlington Today
The brand new Lakeshore Music & Arts Festival debuted just over two weeks ago, and it helped fill a hole left by the departure of Sound of Music this year. For those that enjoyed the live performances by the lake, you will be happy to know that festival season in Burlington is not over just yet.
Spencer Smith Park will host another brand new three-day festival this month, called The Burlington Waterfront Festival. This is a free event that will run July 17 to 19, featuring live music performances, 20+ food vendors, 30+ marketplace vendors, and family games.
What is the difference between the two festivals? They are very similar, but this one is slightly smaller. Organizers are optimistic that the event will draw crowds and be a lot of fun, despite being simpler than the last one.
The lineup’s late night headliners include Smile, Pearl Jamming, and Bad to the Bone, with multiple other bands and DJs performing throughout the day. You can expect lots of tributes throughout the weekend, including ones for The Tragically Hip and Pearl Jam.
Local Twins Join Amazing Race 📺
Twin sisters Christina "Tina" Liao and Elizabeth "Liz" Liao are finally living out a childhood dream. The pair, who now live in Oakville and Waterdown, are competing on season 12 of The Amazing Race Canada, which premiered last night on CTV.
The sisters have been applying since the show's first Canadian season after falling in love with the U.S. version when they were ten. "We're really just enjoying every single moment, savouring it," Liz said.
Both say the experience reinforced how strong their connection is. Tina, a corporate lawyer, and Liz, a family doctor, grew up as figure skaters and share a love for dance and mental challenges. They're also running the race to honour their parents, who immigrated to Canada in their twenties.
Tune in and watch the pair represent Halton as they conquer the Amazing Race! (streaming on Crave)
Empty Space at Bateman 🏗
The Robert Bateman Community Centre on New Street has 20,000 square feet of empty space right now, and the town has worked out three options for what to do with it.
The first option would build out flexible community space, multipurpose rooms that can shift as needs change. The most expensive option.
The second would prioritize leasing to new tenants, keeping costs lower but offering less flexibility for the facility to meet community needs over time.
The third tries to balance both approaches, mixing programming space with revenue-generating leases.
Phase 1 of the centre opened last fall which included Brock University, Burlington Public Library, TechPlace, and the school board as tenants. Staff plan to bring the three Phase 2 concepts to council between April and June next year, with cost estimates for each.
The public will also get a chance to voice their opinions this fall, but no date has been announced yet.

Jersey Mike's is Open 🍽

from Mayor Meed Ward on Instagram
Jersey Mike’s opens today at 10am with a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Canada running through Sunday.
The sandwich shop at 3121 Appleby Line held its ribbon-cutting yesterday, slicing through wrapping paper to mark the chain's 30th Canadian location. Stephen Scarrow, a Jersey Mike's Canada rep and Burlington resident, said the company shares a lot of community values with the city.
Make-A-Wish Canada CEO Meaghan Stovel McKnight called Jersey Mike's pledge the largest corporate commitment the charity has. The chain has promised to raise $1 million by 2030 for Make-A-Wish and already collected more than $200,000 in March. There are currently 14 active wishes in Burlington waiting to be granted.

Pet Spotlight: Meet Natalie! 🐱
Natalie is a beautiful two-year-old girl with a heart full of love waiting to shine. Shelter life has made her a little timid, but we know her confidence will grow with patience and kindness.
During her time in foster care, Natalie was a friendly, affectionate companion who loved spending time with people. She also gets along wonderfully with other cats and would enjoy having a feline friend in her forever home.
Once she feels safe, Natalie will reward her family with purrs, cuddles, and loyal companionship. Could you be the one to give this sweet girl the loving home she deserves?
