Burlington has landed on another "best places to live" list, and this time it's first. WorldAtlas, a geography and travel site that has been online since 1994, put Burlington at the top of its 10 best places to live in Ontario for 2026, ahead of Ottawa, Waterloo and Kingston.

The writer says Burlington keeps turning up at the top of these rankings for practical reasons. The city is regularly among the safest in the country, most residents have a family doctor, and homes still cost less than in Toronto. The article also names neighbourhoods like Aldershot, Shoreacres and Elizabeth Gardens, plus a waterfront and park system where people paddle in the summer and skate and toboggan in the winter.

Halton Hills, Collingwood, Peterborough and Thunder Bay also made the list, but Burlington got the top spot. Congrats, Burlington!

Burlington residents are coming together on Sunday, Oct. 4th, at the Central Recreation Centre on Drury Lane for the annual CIBC Run for the Cure, raising funds to support breast cancer research.

The event is part of the Canadian Cancer Society’s nationwide fundraiser, which is celebrating its 35th year. Participants can choose to run or walk either a 5-kilometer or 1-kilometer route, while others can join a team, volunteer, or donate.

The event will also bring temporary road closures, with New Street closed between Drury Lane and Walker’s Line from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead for the event closure.

Whether running, walking, volunteering, or donating, Burlington residents can come together to show their support and help make a difference.

Locals are invited to gather at Spencer Smith Park on Wednesday, Sept. 30th, for Orange Shirt Day and a Walk for Reconciliation and Peace.

Hosted by local Indigenous community members, the event will begin with opening remarks at 5:00 pm at the pavilion on the park's east end. Participants will then walk along the Waterfront Trail toward Beachway Park, where the walk will end with a tobacco ceremony.

Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led day inspired by residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad and provides an opportunity to reflect, learn, and honour survivors and those affected by residential schools.

Residents are encouraged to wear orange shirts and moccasins if they have them!

Burlington Public Library is getting into the Halloween spirit with a month full of free spooky activities for people of all ages. From Oct. 1 to 31, visitors can enjoy pumpkin-themed storytimes, crafts, and opportunities to build their own Halloween village.

All six library locations will also host a Halloween Party and Parade on Oct. 31, featuring music, games, crafts and costumes. Teens and adults are welcome to come test their problem-solving skills with The Midnight Borrowers Puzzle Mystery, an escape-room-style challenge running throughout October.

With spooky stories, haunted crafts, and Halloween fun, BPL has something for everyone to enjoy this October.

Joanna Baumgartner is riding her bike 100 km from Port Dover to Burlington this Saturday, Sept. 26, to raise money for children in Haiti. Long rides are nothing new for the Burlington mother of four, who regularly cycles to Toronto and Niagara Falls. She'll leave the shore of Lake Erie at 9 a.m., follow old rail trails most of the way, and expects to finish at Rolling Horse Cycle on Plains Road around 3 p.m.

The money goes to B the Hope for Haiti, the charity Baumgartner co-founded to support kids in Ouanaminthe, a town in northern Haiti. When she first visited in 2011, families there were drinking and bathing in water from a polluted river. Since then she has helped build six schools, set up water purification systems and open basic health clinics, in a country where only half of children go to school.

So far she has raised $2,200 of her $7,000 goal. She says every dollar goes straight to the children, and donors get a tax receipt. If you're near Plains Road on Saturday afternoon, go cheer her on at the finish line!
