Museums of Burlington is collecting first-hand stories about Brant Street for a new exhibition opening next summer at Joseph Brant Museum. The exhibit will explore the street's history through the shops, businesses, people, and memories that made it the heart of downtown.

The museum is looking for residents willing to share their recollections in 5 to 10 minute spoken history interviews between now and October. Curator Jessica Benjak-Waterous says whether you remember shopping downtown, meeting friends, attending parades, working in a local business, or just spending time on Brant Street, your memories can help preserve Burlington's history.

The museum is especially interested in hearing from people who remember Brant Street from the 1940s through the 1990s, though stories from any era are welcome.

Heritage Burlington has released the fourth edition of its self-guided Heritage Driving Tour, and this time it takes you along 35 waterfront stops from Royal Botanical Gardens to Burloak.

The tour highlights historic places and stories that show how the lake and waterfront shaped Burlington's growth. You can drive the whole route, or walk or bike any section of it.

Hume's Auction Farm in North Halton is bringing back its annual Steam-Era festival over Labour Day weekend, running from Friday, September 4th through Monday, September 7.

The show celebrates Canada's agricultural and industrial heritage with live demonstrations of gas engines, steam traction engines, antique tractors and vintage cars. This year's featured theme is the evolution of Oliver tractors, and collectors are invited to bring their Hart-Parr and Oliver models to the grounds.

Early bird tickets are $10 until August 23, then $15 at the gate. Kids 12 and under get in free. A weekend pass runs $35, and early ticket buyers get entered into a draw for a Weber pellet grill.

What started as a Tansley Woods Facebook page for pandemic check-ins has grown into Burlington's Community Kindness Connection, a 3,000-member group where neighbours still offer everything from Costco runs to snow shovelling.

Phyllis Alcantara-Zgirta founded the group during lockdown and has since turned it into something bigger. Every Wednesday night, she and a crew of volunteers cook and serve free meals at North Burlington Baptist Church, drawing families who line up both to help and be helped.

The meals are as much about the connections as the food. People share their stories, and Alcantara-Zgirta links them to resources they need. She's built a team of seven regulars who've stuck with her since the start.

Corporal Hayden Phillips, a 20-year-old serving member of the Canadian Armed Forces from Hamilton is planning a 158-kilometre fundraising walk on November 7th to honour the Canadians who died in Afghanistan and raise money for veterans' mental health.

He's walking one kilometre for each of the 158 Canadians killed during the war, starting in Burlington at 5am from the waterfront and heading out to Queenston Heights and back. The walk will take around 40 hours straight without sleeping, and he'll be carrying a weighted backpack the entire way, a training method called rucking.

At the turnaround point, he plans to stop and read all 158 names out loud before heading back to Burlington. Check out his website to learn more about his story and the motivation behind this initiative.
