One of the best hotel restaurants in Canada is sitting right on Burlington's waterfront. OpenTable added Isabelle Restaurant + Lounge at The Pearle Hotel to its 2026 top 50 list last week, and it's one of just 24 Ontario restaurants to make the cut.

It's not Isabelle's first time on a list like this either. The lakefront spot has shown up on OpenTable's best-of rankings for brunch and romantic dining in recent years, with a kitchen that sources produce from its own farm and local partners.

The ranking comes from diner reviews and reservation demand across the country, and OpenTable timed this year's list for August long weekend planning. Ninety per cent of diners say they've eaten at a hotel restaurant without staying the night, so you don't need a room key to go.

The Knights Inn has been renting rooms on Plains Road East for 70 years. If a new proposal goes ahead, the Aldershot motel will be torn down for an 11-storey building with 179 rental apartments, eight ground-floor shops, and 105 parking spaces.

The motel opened as the Town & Country in the mid-1950s, back when Plains Road was Highway 2 and the main route between Toronto and Hamilton. It's one of the last survivors of the motel strip that once lined the road, and the city says it's one of Burlington's most popular locations for film shoots.

Not everyone thinks 11 storeys belongs there. The city's design panel called the scale out of context with the neighbourhood, and the project still needs official plan and zoning changes to go ahead. Council is expected to make that call in September.

The Oakville Museum is running a full slate of exhibits and events through the end of August, and the newest addition is an exhibit about booze. Good Libations traces the town's relationship with alcohol through its taverns, breweries, temperance campaigns and prohibition years.

The rest of the lineup covers a lot of ground. Freedom, Opportunity, and Family tells the stories of Oakville's Black community and the town's role as an Underground Railroad terminus, while the Summer Fun courtyard display keeps things light with a look back at a century of swimwear.

Two dates to mark: the annual Emancipation Day Picnic takes over the museum grounds on Monday, August 3 from 1 to 4 p.m. with live music, food, and storytelling, and the Sunset Social on August 20 pairs a free outdoor folk and bluegrass concert with museum tours from 5 to 9 p.m. The museum is at 8 Navy St., open Tuesday to Sunday, 1 to 4:30 p.m., and admission is by donation.

Wednesday mornings at the Burlington Lions Club Farmers Market come with free ice cream this summer. Kids 12 and under get a treat from 10am to noon every Wednesday through the end of August, courtesy of Kawartha Dairy. Parents aren't left out: a donation to the Lions Club gets you a scoop of your own.

The market itself is one of Burlington's most loved traditions. Lions Club volunteers have been running it for decades at Burlington Centre, with Ontario-grown produce, local meats, baked goods, honey, and a rotating cast of artisan vendors, and the proceeds go back into the club's community programs.

And it's not just Wednesdays: the market also runs Fridays and Saturdays from 7am to 2:30pm through late October.

Finding a volunteer gig in Burlington is about to get a lot easier. Volunteer Halton is bringing its annual fair back to St. Christopher's Church on Saturday, August 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with charities and community groups from across the region set up in one room.

The Burlington Humane Society, Burlington Food Bank, and City of Burlington are among the groups looking for help. Registration is open now on the Volunteer Halton website, and visitors can also enter a draw for a $25 Tim Hortons gift card.
