Canada's Largest Ribfest, the actual name, not just a claim, is coming back to Spencer Smith Park for Labour Day weekend, marking the 30th anniversary of the local tradition.

The Rotary Burlington Lakeshore event has raised about $6 million for at least 35 local and regional charities since it started in 1996. This year's roster includes 16 rib teams, 21 live bands, and a midway, running Friday through Monday, Sept. 4-7.

Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for youth and seniors, and free for kids 12 and under. ABBA Revisited is headlining Sunday night.

The QEW between Guelph Line and Northshore Boulevard is getting widened over the next four years, with HOV lanes added in both directions along the 5.7 kilometre stretch.

The Ministry of Transportation has awarded the contract to Alliance Verdi Civil Inc. The project also includes fixing up five overpasses and structures, including the Brant Street and Fairview Street overpasses and the CNR overhead structures.

Nighttime lane closures are expected through 2029. Anyone who drives this section knows it bottles up daily, and with Skyway closures happening regularly on weekends, congestion in this area is ongoing.

Laurent and Lori Pinci, co-owners of Pillars of Wellness in Burlington, are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in September to raise funds for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. The couple departs Canada on September 22 and starts the seven-day ascent via Tanzania's Machame Route on September 24.

The expedition anchors a community campaign called Climbing Higher Together, which invites Burlington residents to join the 5,895 Challenge by setting their own movement goals, whether that's walking the dog, cycling to work, or doing rehabilitation exercises. The campaign aims to raise $5,895, one dollar for every meter of Kilimanjaro's elevation.

Community members can sponsor a meter, follow daily updates from the mountain, or share their own stories of resilience.

The Butter Tart Festival Races returned to Spencer Smith Park on Saturday morning, raising money for Hamilton Food Share and the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation. Participants brought in around $7,000 between the two charities.

Runners chose between one, three, and five kilometre distances along the waterfront route, starting at Burlington Pier and running past Beachway Park before turning back. The kids' one kilometre run started at 9:30 a.m., with the longer distances starting at 10 a.m.

Finishers received either a butter tart medal or a Burlington Pier spinner medal, plus butter tarts from Longo's.

Jazz On The Plaza wrapped up its three-day run at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre, drawing capacity crowds each evening and solid turnout for the daytime sets.

The free festival has become an annual summer fixture at the downtown performing arts centre, with 10 acts filling the plaza across Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
