King Road Might Really Happen 🏗

Rendering of the new project
Burlington council has approved zoning changes for a massive $6 billion development at 1200 King Road, clearing one of the final hurdles for what could become one of the city's largest new communities.
The 49-hectare site between Highway 403 and the Lakeshore West train line is planned to hold around 9,000 residential units, a community centre, commercial space, a large central park, and a satellite campus likely for Mohawk College. The developer estimates the full buildout will take 10 to 15 years.
As you may have guessed, the project is also facing its challenges. CN Rail has asked the city to defer approval, pointing to an old agreement that says no one can build homes next to the Aldershot Rail Yard. City staff attached a condition that blocks building on that spot until the dispute is settled.
Council will make the final decision at its July 21 meeting.
Butter Tart Market Incoming 🥧
The Burlington Butter Tart Market is taking over the Art Gallery of Burlington next month, with dozens of vendors ready to show off their wares.
Award-winning bakers and local vendors will have their tarts and other treats available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 8. A marketplace with crafts and other goodies will also be set up during the festival.
Admission is free, so bring an appetite and some cash to stock up on tarts.
VegFest Back at Spencer Smith 🎉
Burlington VegFest is back at Spencer Smith Park on Saturday, August 15, and organizers are expecting the biggest turnout yet. Last year drew 15,000 people, the festival's largest crowd in its five-year run, and this year's lineup has grown to around 70 vendors, up from previous years.
The free one-day festival runs 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and celebrates plant-based eating with food vendors, cooking demos, speakers, and a fun zone with a bouncy castle and dunk tank. New this year: a DJ and a main stage replacing the gazebo setup.
Organizers say the event welcomes everyone, from the vegan-curious to long-term committed. A prize wheel at the welcome booth will help fund the festival's annual vegan food drive.

Bar Origin Opens Downtown 🍸
Chef Claudio Aprile's Bar Origin opened its doors downtown this week at 399 Elizabeth St., bringing one of Canada's most celebrated restaurant concepts to Burlington.
The original location launched in Toronto in 2010 and quickly became known for globally inspired dishes and a lively vibe. The new spot features reimagined classics from that original menu, including the Bar Origin Burger with a thicker patty and beef short rib marmalade, plus fresh takes on devilled eggs and beet salad.
The space includes an 80-seat main dining room, a 20-seat cocktail lounge, a 30-seat patio, and an open kitchen. Aprile partnered with Burlington entrepreneurs Maria and Chris Pagonis, who grew up in the local restaurant business, to relaunch the concept here.
Cherry Tree Pathway Gets Upgrade 🌸
Spencer Smith Park's iconic cherry tree pathway is getting a major refresh, with construction set to begin this fall after Ribfest wraps up.
The city is building a new four-metre-wide accessible concrete pathway bordered by 18 newly-planted cherry trees. The existing trees, a gift from Burlington's twin city Itabashi, Japan, are nearing the end of their natural lifespan despite years of pruning.
The phased plan lets new trees take root before the old ones are removed, so the park's springtime cherry blossom display continues uninterrupted. By 2031, when the remaining aging trees are replaced, the new sakura will be well established and the waterfront more accessible for everyone.
