Burlington City Council and local residents who oppose developer Millcroft Greens Corporation (and its Phase 2 application for the Millcroft Golf Club lands) are debating the future of Millcroft Golf Course.

After years of dispute, council decided this month to oppose the proposal to build more homes. The proposal included 138 singles and townhomes on Millcroft Golf Club land. They argue for preserving greenspace, flood management, and neighbourhood character, while the developer says the land can support needed housing.

However, the Ontario Land Tribunal could still override the local decision, as it did with the project's earlier phase. As of right now, Phase 1 has already been approved by the OLT and work has started on the golf course, but Phase 2 is under review.

Mayor Meed Ward didn't hide her frustration with the tribunal system, floating the idea of pushing to have it abolished altogether. "I will get a petition going," she said. Whether the province intervenes to protect the remaining greenspace or allows the OLT process to run its course again, residents are prepared to keep fighting.

This year, for Ontario Culture Days, a province-wide three-week celebration of Canadian arts and culture, Burlington aims to spotlight its own cultural spaces and encourage residents to explore them.

Discover Burlington and fifteen participating cultural venues, including the Art Gallery of Burlington, Joseph Brant Museum, Royal Botanical Gardens, and the Burlington Performing Arts Centre are offering a free, self-guided "Culture Crawl" using a mobile pass that lets residents check in at cultural sites around the city. Residents are encouraged to visit multiple stops to earn prizes across three tiers.

Note: The pass doesn't cover admission fees where required.

The pass becomes available starting today, with the crawl running through the end of Ontario Culture Days on Sunday, Oct. 4th.

The Art Gallery of Burlington opened a new exhibition on Saturday built around one material: birch bark. Wiigwasitig / waskway / Honouring the Birch Tree brings together five Indigenous artists who each work with it differently, from Helen Pelletier's birch corsets to Seth Arcand's photography to the birch bark biting of Pat Bruderer and Angelique Merasty.

The first two words of the name are Anishinaabemowin and Cree for birch tree. Curator Albany Sutherland says skills like basketry and bark biting have been at risk of being lost because of colonization and residential schools, and they only survive if someone teaches them. Amber Sandy, whose work hangs next to that of her mentor Pelletier, put it this way: "We're still here making baskets but we're also doing all the other really cool, new, unique stuff."

The show runs until January 3, 2027, and admission is free.
