🏡 What is your home actually worth today?

If you have ever typed your address into one of those online estimators, you already know the number can be a long way off. It has never seen your home, and it does not know what makes yours different from the next one down the street.

Let me give you a real valuation instead.

I am out helping people buy and sell across Burlington every week, so I know what homes like yours are going for right now. Tell me a bit about your place, and I will put together a short video that walks you through what it could sell for, and why.

This is totally free, with no pressure to list. See what your home is worth today, whether you are planning a move or just curious.

We’re Hiring a Writer! ✍️

Exciting news… We're looking to hire a local writer for the Burlington Digest!

We are looking for someone from Burlington who can spot the stories worth reading and tell them in their own voice. Someone who knows the town and can make the week's news and local happenings fun and easy to read.

You don't need to be a professional or have a journalism degree. If you love writing and you know Burlington, you'd be a great fit. The role will be part-time, work from home, and have flexible hours.

If this sounds interesting to you, or someone you know, please fill out our short application below, which includes some questions so we can get to know you, and a short writing submission.

Please submit your applications before Sunday, August 23rd at midnight.

Fall Rec Registration Opens Soon 🏊

Registration for Burlington's fall and winter recreation programs opens next week, with several new options for kids and youth joining the lineup.

Adult programs open first, registration starts Aug 20 at 7 am. Youth programs, swimming lessons, and aquatic leadership courses follow on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 9 am.

New additions this season include Baking Adventures for ages 3-5, a preschool sports program called Have a Ball, and a gaming club for youth featuring Nintendo Switch and Xbox tournaments. There's a life-skills course covering resumes, budgeting, and job searches - and that is just some of the list.

The city also runs an expanded fee assistance program for families who need help covering costs.

Vegfest Takes Over Waterfront Saturday 🌱

Burlington Vegfest is taking over Spencer Smith Park this Saturday with vegan food, local crafts, and live music.

More than 60 vendors and exhibitors will be set up at the waterfront park, featuring everything from handmade jewelry to pilates courses and a family fun zone. Award-winning musician Stephanie Braganza will perform alongside talks from local activists.

The festival runs this Saturday, August 15th from 11:30am to 6pm and is free to attend. Organizers are also running a food drive, donations will go toward purchasing vegan food for the Burlington Food Bank.

Free Sport Stations Now Live 🏀

Partial screenshot from the app

Burlington has officially started rolling out their free sports equipment lockers across 20 local parks, with the first few going live earlier this week. The 12-month pilot project lets residents borrow basketballs, soccer balls, frisbees, pickleball paddles, and more through a mobile app called Equip Sport.

The lockers should be fully installed by the end of today, and the app will show which parks have active lockers for you to reference. Each location holds different equipment, the full list of parks and what's available at each one is on the city's website.

The city officially launched the program on August 4 in partnership with Jumpstart and Equip Sport, calling it a way to give families easier access to unstructured play and physical activity without needing to own the gear.

Terry Fox Run Returns Downtown 🏃

Burlington's Terry Fox Run is back at Spencer Smith Park on Sunday, September 20, with a goal of raising $200,000 for cancer research. Last year's event hit that same mark, continuing a tradition that has raised more than $1 billion since Terry Fox started his Marathon of Hope in 1980.

Nancy Demerling, co-chair of the local organizing committee, says younger generations are carrying the torch now, including summer student Leah Dear, who has been organizing a team called Happy Feet Family since she was nine.

Dr. John Goffin, a local oncologist who has taken part for 20 years, points to the progress made since 1980. Children with leukemia had a survival rate of around 3 per cent back then; today it's higher than 90 per cent. Registration opens at 8 a.m. downtown near Brant and Lakeshore, with the run kicking off at 9.
